Specify what churn means
Churn is not a universal label. In a synthetic prepaid telecom project, you might define it as no qualifying paid activity for a chosen number of days. A contractual cancellation is a different event. State the definition, observation window, prediction date, and future outcome window before fitting anything. Otherwise, your model may answer a question that a retention team never asked.
Write an example customer timeline. Show which recharge, usage, and service records existed on the prediction date. Mark later events as unavailable features. This simple diagram often reveals more about leakage than another page of model tuning.
Construct features without borrowing the future
Build one row per subscriber per prediction date. Useful synthetic features might include days since recharge, recent usage change, failed recharge attempts, and service complaint counts. Define the aggregation windows explicitly. Do not include cancellation reasons, final account status, or a later retention offer in features intended for an earlier prediction.
Split by time rather than randomly mixing near-identical snapshots from the same subscriber across training and evaluation. Keep a subscriber identifier for auditing, not as a predictive shortcut. If repeated observations are essential, explain how your evaluation prevents information from one customer's future leaking into an earlier assessment.
Start with an operational baseline
Before comparing complex models, rank customers by a transparent rule such as recent inactivity. Then fit a simple classifier using the same available information. Scikit-learn's guidance on common pitfalls explains why preprocessing must be learned from training data rather than from the full dataset. A pipeline can help keep those transformations together.
Compare methods against the actual contact capacity. If a team can investigate only a limited list, evaluate precision and recall within that list rather than celebrating overall accuracy. An accuracy score can look strong when most subscribers do not meet your churn definition.
Separate prediction from offer effectiveness
A customer likely to leave is not necessarily a customer whose decision an offer can change. Some will remain without intervention; others will leave despite one. State that a churn score estimates risk under the dataset's conditions, not incremental retention caused by a campaign. Do not label predicted high-risk customers as proven campaign wins.
Create a hypothetical cost worksheet with clearly invented assumptions for contact cost, incentive cost, and retained contribution. Vary them to show when a campaign would cease to be attractive. Explain that a randomized experiment or another defensible causal design would be needed to estimate actual intervention impact.

Investigate errors and responsible use
Inspect false positives and false negatives by meaningful operational groups, such as tenure band or product type. Small groups can produce unstable rates, so display sample sizes and avoid sweeping fairness conclusions. Remove personal identifiers from published examples, and do not publish genuine call records or location histories.
Write an error review for three synthetic subscribers. One may show seasonal inactivity, another a missing billing feed, and another a genuine service issue. Distinguishing data failure from customer behaviour makes the project more useful than a leaderboard. It also gives an interviewer concrete evidence of your judgement.
Package the project as a retention decision brief
Deliver a reproducible feature script, a time-based evaluation, a contact-capacity chart, and a short limitations document. Include a data dictionary that defines activity and the exact label horizon. Explain how results would be refreshed and what would happen when product definitions change. Do not suggest that a public sample establishes performance for a Pakistani operator.
As a final exercise, move the prediction date forward and repeat the analysis without retuning on the test period. Describe the change in ranking quality and investigate plausible causes. The portfolio's strongest result may be a well-explained failure that reveals why deployment requires monitoring.
